Understanding the similarities and differences between these cosmetic treatments can help determine which one is best for you. While Botox is an excellent product with world class name recognition, there are 3 other FDA-approved Botox Alternatives  with similar effectiveness.

Similarities

All neurotoxins block signals from the nerves to the muscles and work by decreasing contraction of your facial muscles. This typically helps your face and skin appear smoother, more relaxed and youthful for 3-4 months. These injections are typically given to minimize horizontal forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines between your brows. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin all contain a refined version of botulinum toxin, a bacterium that temporarily stops facial muscles in the targeted areas from contracting and expanding.

Differences

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau each contain a slightly different formulation of botulinum toxin which can lead to slight differences in results, such as how quickly it starts to work and how much diffusion occurs. Botox and Dysport contain protective proteins, while Xeomin does not. There are also cost differences. Botox has the most name recognition and is typically more expensive than Dysport and Xeomin. Many people say “Botox” as a generic term when discussing these types of treatments. This is because Botox was the first in its class in the USA and has excellent name recognition. Botox alternatives such as Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau are considered to be safe and effective as well.

Botox

Botox is perhaps the most well-known neurotoxin. It’s renowned for its ability to smooth out forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. Botox works by temporarily relaxing the underlying muscles, preventing them from contracting and creating wrinkles. The results typically last three to four months, making it a reliable choice for maintaining a youthful appearance.

Dysport

Dysport is another popular option, particularly for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Dr. Croland prefers Dysport over all others, thanks to its slightly different formulation that allows it to spread more easily over larger areas. This characteristic makes Dysport an excellent choice for treating broader regions with multiple fine lines. The effects of Dysport can last up to four months.

Xeomin

Xeomin is often referred to as a “naked” neurotoxin because it doesn’t contain any additives. This purity can reduce the likelihood of developing resistance to the treatment over time. Xeomin is effective for treating frown lines between the eyebrows and provides results similar to Botox, with effects lasting about three to four months.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau, also known as “Newtox,” is the latest addition to the neurotoxin family. It’s specifically designed for aesthetic use, making it a top choice for those seeking cosmetic improvements. Jeuveau is particularly effective for smoothing out glabellar lines (the lines between your eyebrows). The results of Jeuveau can last up to 12-16 weeks, depending on the dosage injected.
