Fuller lips can give men and women a more youthful and healthy appearance. Many people come to our office with concerns about thin lips. With aging, lips can lose volume with fine lines also appearing around the mouth. We can treat the lip lines using wrinkle relaxers like Botox or a combination of wrinkle relaxers and lip fillers.

FAQs About Thin Lips

A non-surgical cosmetic treatment that is performed to improve volume and fullness of the lips. These fillers can also improve wrinkles and creases around the lip by restoring volume and shape. Lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in the skin that retains water and hydrates while providing structural support to the skin. Lip fillers can provide an immediate, noticeable enhancement to the lips.

Most lip filler treatments last between six to twelve months and we recommend booster top-ups every six to eight months to patients who want to maintain their fullness and structure.

As with any procedure where a fine needle is passed through the skin, patients may feel a slight discomfort when having  injections in the lips. While the discomfort is usually very tolerable, Dr. Croland lessens the discomfort by using topical anesthetic prior to the treatment. In patients with a lower pain tolerance or who feel particularly anxious, Dr. Croland can also perform a dental block  (like going to the dentist) which will numb the entire peri-oral area.

We also offer Nitronox, an on-demand delivery system that provides a 50/50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. It is used to help ease discomfort during some aesthetic procedures. If you experience any discomfort or anxiety during your treatment, you are able to inhale the gas mixture through a mouthpiece, as needed, to minimize anxiety and discomfort.

Lip filler injections are considered generally safe when performed by an experienced injector like Dr. Croland.

The following side effects or adverse reactions, when they occur, are generally mild and self limiting:

  • Swelling and bruising lasting from 3 days to 2 weeks
  • Bleeding at the injection site
  • Pain
  • Reactivation of cold sore outbreak (must premedicate if you get cold sores!)

More serious side effects and complications are considered rare and may include:

  • Skin infections
  • Allergic reactions
  • Asymmetry and poor aesthetic outcome
  • Tissue damage causing ulceration, scarring or necrosis (tissue death)

The beauty of using HA fillers is that they can be dissolved if the need ever arises. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that is injected to dissolve HA fillers very effectively.
